Region_2 Ideas

Many members of the public have shared their visions for the I-81 region. This blog post presents just two of the hundreds of ideas people shared during our first round of public workshops in early May. But remember, no decision has been made about I-81. What are your ideas? Share your vision by participating in the virtual workshop.

Description of Idea #1:

Reconfigure the highways system. The current sections of I-81 between 481 north and 481 south should be re-branded as “spurs”. I-81 north of 690 terminates at Salina, Franklin, and Clinton Streets, also maintaining the connection to 690 east. I-81 south of 690 becomes an “exit spur” from 481 from south of the city to just below Adams Street where the current viaduct begins.

How this idea could benefit the region:

It maintains access to downtown destinations through existing right of ways and utilizes the existing 481 corridor for through traffic.

Description of Idea #2:

Leave the highway as it is, with a few small changes. For downtown destinations, use the Armory Square Rail for passengers. Expand West Street to reach I-81 north.

How this idea could benefit the region:

It will increase the sense of place in Syracuse, and facilitate tourism and economic development.
